The School of English Literature, Language and Linguistics at Newcastle University wishes to appoint a Lecturer in Sociolinguistics. You will have a PhD in a relevant subject area and experience in undergraduate teaching of sociolinguistics and language variation and change, as well as the fundamentals of linguistics as a subject area. Knowledge of the history of English and/or English historical sociolinguistics would be an advantage. An excellent publication record for your career stage and the potential to make a significant contribution to the research culture of both the School and our Faculty are essential.
The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to a Stage 1 module introducing quantitative approaches to variation and change, as well as to a Stage 2 module on sociolinguistics and the sociology of language. The opportunity will also exist to design and deliver a specialist module at Stage 3. Lecturing staff in addition participate in the School's thriving postgraduate culture by teaching on MA programmes and supervising PhD students.
You will be joining a well-established team of scholars working on linguistics and English language within the School. Particular strengths lie in the study of language structure, sociolinguistics, dialectology, language acquisition, the history of English and language evolution. Funded research projects over the past few years have addressed topics across these areas, including the syntax of polarity marking (http://global.oup.com/academic/product/the-syntax-of-yes-and-no-9780198701859), Tyneside English (http://research.ncl.ac.uk/decte/), varieties of Irish English (http://www.lel.ed.ac.uk/dialects/ni.html) and language acquisition by low-literate learners (http://simplycrackinggoodstories.org).
The School is receiving a substantial amount of new investment from the University, supporting doctoral studentships, postdoctoral fellowships and new members of staff in key strategic areas. Ambitious new research directions are also emerging around Language and Cognition where Research Excellence Academy/British Academy postdoctoral fellows have already been appointed and strategic collaborations are developing between other Schools in the Faculty (e.g., the School of Education, Communication and Language Sciences) and cross-Faculty Research Groups (particularly the collaborative Leverhulme Doctoral Scholarships with the Centre for Behaviour and Evolution/Institute for Neuroscience).
