Funding for Linguistics PhDs and MA+PhD at the University of Surrey

    Surrey Morphology Group is pleased to announce that AHRC and ESRC funding is available for students wishing to carry out PhD research in theoretical, typological, or descriptive linguistics in SMG or applied linguistics in the School of English and Languages at the University of Surrey.

    Funding for PhD research (including fees and maintenance) is available from the TECHNE Doctoral Training Partnership (AHRC) and the SeNSS Doctoral Training Partnership (ESRC). Funding for completing a Masters followed by a PhD is available in the form of a 3+1 SeNSS Studentship. 

    TECHNE Studentships

    Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) Studentships (maintenance and fees for 3 years for a full-time student or 5 years for a part-time student) are available for Home and EU students who are normally resident in the UK through the TECHNE Doctoral Training Partnership. UK and EU students who have not been normally resident in the UK for the the last three years are eligible for fees but not maintenance. Overseas students are not eligible for TECHNE Studentships.

    TECHNE Studentships support linguistic research into the structure, history, theory and description of language and languages. This includes the development and exploration of theories of language, the elucidation of the historical development of languages and the production of descriptions of languages or features of languages. They also fund research into phonetics and applied linguistics relating to these areas.

    This studentship competition involves a selection process. Your prospective supervisor will be able to provide guidance on whether you are eligible to apply for this funding streams.

    SeNNS Studentships

    Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) Studentships (maintenance and fees for 3 years for a full-time student or 5 years for a part-time student) are available for UK and EU students who are normally resident in the UK through the Southeast Network for Social Science (SeNSS) Doctoral Training Partnership. UK and EU students who have not been normally resident in the UK for the the last three years are eligible for fees but not maintenance.Overseas students are not eligible for SeNSS Studentships

    SeNSS scholarships support linguistic research in areas of computational linguistics, psycholinguistics, sociolinguistics, and interdisciplinary social science research involving linguistics. They also fund research into phonetics and applied linguistics relating to these areas.
