The Surrey Morphology Group at the School of English and Languages of the University of Surrey is seeking to appoint a post-doctoral Research Fellow for a three-year Arts and Humanities Research Council funded project "Loss of Inflection" (Principal Investigator Matthew Baerman, Co-Investigators Oliver Bond and Greville Corbett). The project is a cross-linguistic historical and typological study of how inflectional morphology can be lost over time, oriented around five research questions: (1) Are some morphosyntactic features more likely to be lost than others? (2) Are some types of morphological marking more likely to be lost than others? (3) Does the complexity of an inflectional system affect its stability? (4) What is the relationship between inflectional loss and syntactic change? (5) Is the 'natural' loss of inflection different from contact-induced change? The project activities will include the construction of a cross-linguistic database.

The successful candidate should have a background in historical or typological linguistics; experience in database design and construction would be a plus. Candidates must have the ability to work independently while functioning as part of a research team. The position is available from 31 March 2016.

Information about the Surrey Morphology Group and their current research projects is available at www.smg.surrey.ac.uk.

Candidates are requested to apply using the online form at jobs.surrey.ac.uk/vacancy.aspx?ref=088215. Informal enquiries may be made to Dr Matthew Baerman (m.baerman@surrey.ac.uk), Dr Oliver Bond (o.bond@surrey.ac.uk) or Professor Greville Corbett (g.corbett@surrey.ac.uk). The application deadline is 31 January 2016.

We acknowledge, understand and embrace diversity.
