AHRC Funding for PhD in Linguistics and Phonetics at University of Leeds

    The School of Languages, Cultures and Societies at the University of Leeds invites excellent applications for PhD studentships in Linguistics and Phonetics. Funding is available through The White Rose College of the Arts & Humanities (WRoCAH), a Doctoral Training Partnership of the Universities of Leeds, Sheffield and York. WRoCAH is able to offer 54 AHRC studentships per year to candidates with a place for doctoral study at the Universities of Leeds, Sheffield or York. Research Training Masterships are also available. Applicants for an AHRC studentship must have applied for a place of study in an eligible School, Department or Centre and may only apply for funding at one of Leeds, Sheffield or York. Applicants must be eligible to pay fees at UK/EU rates. Closing date for funding applications is 2 February 2015 for study commencing in 2015/16.

    In addition, the following awards for PhD study are available at the University of Leeds:

    • 110 Anniversary Research Scholarships: 110 available across all subject areas at the University of Leeds.
    • University Research Scholarships: 18 available across all subject areas at the University of Leeds.
    • School of Languages, Cultures and Societies Scholarships: A variable number of postgraduate bursaries are available each year.

    We welcome research proposals in the following areas:

    • Language acquisition, including first and second language acquisition and developmental pragmatics
    • Psycholinguistics, including sentence processing and experimental pragmatics
    • Discourse studies, including politeness theory, language and gender, language and power and interactional linguistics
    • Syntax and its interaction with information structure and morphology
    • Phonetics and phonology, including acoustic and instrumental phonetics, laboratory phonology and the study of spontaneous speech patterns

    Please note that we are unable to supervise research projects related to language teaching/pedagogy.
