    Message # 12931520

Well, we finally had the chance to meet in person at LAGB 2022 at Ulster University, and it was a joyous occasion!  Many many thanks to Jenny Amos and Vahid Parvaresh, our Meetings Secretaries; Raffaella Folli, Julie Gerard, Catrin Rhys,  Christina Sevdali, and all other members of the amazing Ulster team; Marc Olivier-Loiseau and the Student Committee;  Maria Teresa Guasti and Liina Pylkkänen, our invited speakers; all the abstract reviewers, and—last but most importantly—all the presenters and (very active!) participants.

LAGB 2023 will be hosted by Anglia Ruskin University. Tentative dates: week commencing 4th September 2023. Put a block in your diaries now!

We also held the LAGB’s Annual General Meeting. You can now read the minutes (and please do!) but here I would like to first mention our prizewinners, and then to alert you to 3 items for action

The winners of the Outstanding Undergraduate Dissertation in Linguistics (OUDiL)were announced. As ever, all the nominated work was truly impressive! There were four winners this year: Giulia Li Calzi (UCL); Cliodhna Hughes (Edinburgh); Daniel Price(QMUL); Eve Whitaker (Newcastle). The website will be updated shortly with the names of all nominees and other information

The 2022 winner of the Siewierska Prize for work in linguistics by an early career researcher is Qianping Gu (Southeastern University).  We hope to award the prize again in 2024—Please check out the website for details of eligibility

Many congratulations to all nominees and winners! The quality of the work submitted is a wonderful indication of the vitality of linguistics research in the UK.

    IMMEDIATE ACTION:

    1. 3 positions on the LAGB committee are now open for nominations (including self-nominations):  President, Assistant Secretary, and Membership Secretary. Please consider a role on the committee—it’s a really rewarding way to contribute to our community (also: fun).  Nominations should be sent to me, Caroline Heycock,  by 14th October 2022. Any necessary balloting will then take place online.
    2. Please also send me your suggestions for invited speakers at next year’s LAGB. Bear in mind that we currently aim to have only one speaker (out of the two we invite) who would require a long-haul flight.  Suggestions make in recent years that will be carried over for consideration: Andrea Moro, Laura McPherson, Judith Tonhauser, Norvin Richards, Ailis Cournane, Emmanuel Chemla, Elena Anagnostopoulou. Deadline for emailing suggestions, which will then be included in a consultative ballot of all members: 14th October 2022
    3. Finally: We are still interested in hearing from institutions interested in hosting LAGB in future years! If you are interested but want to discuss further, please contact one or both of the Meetings Secretaries (addresses on the Committee page).

    Caroline Heycock
    President, LAGB
