    Dear LAGB members,

Please circulate the following to potentially interested Early Career linguists, and if you are an Early Career scholar yourself, please consider expressing interest in this post. Note the upcoming deadline of 30 September. As I mentioned at the AGM last week, there is a lot that Linguistics can both learn from and contribute to the substantial, multi-faceted outreach and other initiatives within UCML, so the LAGB are keen to have better representation and links with them.

Do have a look at the UCML website: https://university-council-modern-languages.org/ and in particular at their Early Career Special Interest Group website: https://university-council-modern-languages.org/early-career-academics/.

Feel free to contact me (y.kim@essex.ac.uk) with any questions, or just to let the LAGB know if you intend to put yourself forward, which will be very welcome. Thank you.

    Best wishes,

    Yuni

    Call for Representatives

For the University Council of Modern Languages Early Career Academics Special Interest Group

The ECA SIG at UCML seeks representatives from a range of areas to boost our representation of languages and pedagogic disciplines. We are calling for self-nominations from early career academics (including PhD candidates) for the following roles. The new representatives may remain members of the ECA SIG until they choose to step down.

    • Language Teaching (any language specialisms)
    • Germanic and/or Low countries
    • Middle Eastern
    • Lusophone
    • SOAS/East Asian
    • Middle Eastern
    • East Asian
    • Linguistics
    • Wales (Welsh and/or area studies)
    • Celtic

The ECA SIG meets every six months, in person or online, to discuss new initiatives and support programmes for early career academics in the disciplines of languages and cultures. Each representative is in charge of their sub-discipline or nation and is asked to update the SIG at our meetings. We address the challenges facing early career researchers and teachers in the current climate of precarity, organising workshops and events, and feeding back to UCML as an organisation.

To nominate yourself, please email Liam Lewis (the UCML ECA Rep: liam.lewis@liverpool.ac.uk) by noon on Friday 30 September 2022 with the following information: your full name, your current or most recent affiliation, the area you would like to represent from the list above, and a brief summary of your current teaching and/or research activities (max 100 words).

Interested candidates can browse our webpages (https://university-council-modern-languages.org/early-career-academics/) and informally consult the current co-chairs: Hilary Potter (hilaryjanepotter@gmail.com) and Ashley Harris (ashley.harris@stir.ac.uk).

Following UCML, the ECA SIG seeks to ensure a balance of sexes, regions, and types of HEI (pre- and post-92) among its members.
