A request for responses to a UKRI survey on OA monograph publishing, circulated by the AHA (Arts and Humanities Alliance). Deadline: Monday 1st October.

In July 2018, Research England, Jisc, the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) and the British Academy (BA) appointed Fullstopp GmbH to collect and analyse data that will seek to answer a set of challenges and questions put forward by sector representatives. 

Working with the UUK OA monograph group, the four project partners and Fullstopp aim to provide an evidence base that will be used to inform future policy decisions on OA and academic books.

The objectives of this work are to:

• Conduct interviews with a range of stakeholders in order to understand the specific challenges or barriers to the stakeholder group;
  
• To identity a set of challenges and questions that may be addressed through data analysis;
  
• To collect and analyse data on open access monographs. This data may be related to publishing and purchasing trends, the role of academic libraries, embargo periods, licensing, and outputs submitted to the REF 2014.
  
• Provide a set of conclusions that articulates the implications of making books open access, and for not going OA.
  

The main aim of this work is to provide a robust evidence base that will be used to inform future policy decisions on open access, and the final project report will contribute to a further understanding of the current landscape of open access monographs.

We are keen to ensure that this project captures the views of learned societies, subject associations and individual members of the academic community. Therefore, we would like to invite you to participate in a short survey (5-6 minutes), the results of which will inform the outcomes of this work.

In order to protect potentially commercially sensitive data, a non-disclosure agreement has been signed by Fullstopp. The final report will also ensure that any data collected as part of the project is presented in a suitably aggregated format to ensure that publishers and individual institutions cannot be identified. Individual datasets will not be retained once the project has come to a close.
