The School of English Literature, Language and Linguistics at Newcastle University, UK wishes to appoint a Lecturer in Language and Cognition.
You will have a PhD in Linguistics, Cognitive Science or a related field (in hand or near completion) and experience in undergraduate teaching of a field of linguistics related to language and cognition, as well as the fundamentals of linguistics as a subject area.
We are open to candidates from a variety of different primary and secondary fields (e.g., language evolution, neurolinguistics/psycholinguistics, language acquisition, syntax, semantics/pragmatics). An excellent publication record for your career stage and the potential to make a significant contribution to the research culture of both the School and our Faculty are essential.
Whatever the specific primary or secondary field, we expect that candidates will have some background in experimental methodology and quantitative analysis, and can teach these methods at a high level. We particularly encourage candidates with a collaborative bent, who can envision themselves working with theoreticians and experimentalists in a variety of fields, and who can situate their study of language in the wider study of cognition, and/or other scientific fields.
The successful candidate will have the opportunity to play an important role in shaping the Language and Linguistics Subject Group’s emerging research directions in Language and Cognition, where Research Excellence Academy/British Academy postdoctoral fellows have already been appointed and strategic collaborations are developing between other Schools in the Faculty (e.g., the School of Education, Communication and Language Sciences) and cross-Faculty Research Groups. Our School has strong ties with the Centre for Behaviour and Evolution and the Institute of Neuroscience, and collaborate on their Masters and PhD programmes in evolution, human behaviour and animal behaviour (particularly their collaborative Leverhulme Doctoral Scholarships)
The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to a Stage 1 module which situates the study of language within its broader intellectual and scientific context, as well as to design and deliver honors-level modules in their particular area of expertise. Lecturing staff in addition participate in the School’s thriving postgraduate culture by teaching on MA programmes and supervising PhD students.
Informal enquiries can be made to: Dr Geoff Poole, Head of the School’s Language/Linguistics Subject Group: Geoffrey.Poole@ncl.ac.uk or Dr James Annesley, Head of School, James.Annesley@ncl.ac.uk.
