The Department of Modern Languages at the University of Southampton(http://www.southampton.ac.uk/ml/invites applications to a Lectureship in Linguistics, available from 1 September 2016 on a permanent basis (salary £31,656 to £35,609 per annum, depending upon experience and qualifications).

Applications are invited from promising scholars in sociolinguistics with active research and teaching interests in the field of variation and change in English. The closing date for applications is Sunday 1st May 2016.

You must have completed a PhD in a relevant field and show a developing profile of international excellence in research and publications, together with potential for attracting research funding. You will be expected to
contribute to research-led teaching, offering high quality courses in variationist sociolinguistics. You will support the delivery and ongoing development of a new BA in English Language and Linguistics, leading undergraduate modules in varieties of English and the history of English, as well as contributing to other linguistics modules according to your specific areas of expertise: demonstrable research and teaching experience in related
fields of linguistics (for example phonetics, phonology, syntax, diachronic linguistics or forensic linguistics) will be an advantage. Your teaching profile will complement and extend the current provision in linguistics both for students specialising in the subject and for languages students electing to take module options in the discipline: the ability to deliver courses that engage the interest of students from a range of different languages degree programmes is essential.
