The University of Kent is pleased to announce Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) funding of the Consortium for Humanities and the Arts South-East (CHASE) of which Kent is a member. CHASE is matching AHRC funding of £17m and will be awarding 375 AHRC-studentships over the next five years. Up to 75 of these studentships are offered for September 2014 entry. CHASE will offer students a wide range of exciting opportunities to gain professional experience, work across institutions and disciplines, and acquire advanced research skills. Candidates in Linguistics will have to apply for a place on the PhD programme in Linguistics offered by the Department of English Language and Linguistics at Kent. You are encouraged to contact a potential supervisor within the Department and the School’s Director of Graduate Studies as soon as possible to discuss your application. Applications should be sent as early as possible and no later than 31 January 2014 to be considered for a CHASE studentship.

Making Your Application

NB: The application process for AHRC CHASE studentships involves two stages and applicants are recommended to apply as soon as possible.

To be considered for this award, you should make an application for admission to a PhD in the normal manner through the University of Kent Graduate School. You do not need to submit a separate application form to be considered for a CHASE studentship.

Linguistics at the University of Kent

The PhD programme in Linguistics is offered through the department of English Language and Linguistics (ELL) which is part of Kent’s School of European Culture and Languages. ELL is a young, dynamic and growing department with a vibrant research culture. We specialise in experimental and theoretical linguistics, sociolinguistics and stylistics. In addition to English and its varieties, ELL members work on French, German, Greek, Romani, Francoprovençal, Korean and Russian. ELL has its own research laboratory, the Linguistics Lab, which is equipped with state-of-the-art facilities for empirical research and statistical modelling in speech production and perception, language processing and language acquisition.
