    Northern Scholars Scheme PhD Scholarship

The committee of the Northern Scholars Scheme is delighted to announce a three-year PhD scholarship supported by the Principal’s Fund. The scholarship will be in the field of Scandinavian place-names in the British Isles. The supervisors will be drawn from the departments of Scandinavian Studies and Celtic and Scottish Studies within the School of Literatures, Languages and Cultures at the University of Edinburgh.

The new scholarship will be awarded to a PhD candidate commencing their research studies in the academic year 2013-2014.

    Award

The award will cover the UK/EU rate of tuition fee plus a stipend for subsistence, in sum limited upwards to £12,000.

Successful non-EU/overseas applicants will be liable for the difference between the UK/EU tuition fee rate each year and must expect that the whole annual sum of £12,000 will go towards the tuition fee. Subject to satisfactory progress, the scholarships will be awarded for a maximum of three years. Additional Programme Costs are not included in this award and successful applicants will remain liable for this cost (currently c. £100 per year for standard PhD programmes).

    Eligibility

The awards are open to UK, EU and overseas students commencing a PhD degree in the academic year 2013-2014. Applicants must have applied for admission to year one of a full-time PhD programme of study within the School of Literatures, Languages and Cultures before 1 February 2013. They must have received an offer of admission by the time the selection committee meets at the start of March. Only applications to year one of a PhD programme of study will be considered. The awards will be made based on academic merit. Successful applicants are likely to hold a UK first class honours undergraduate degree (or overseas equivalent) in a relevant field and to have demonstrated a high academic achievement in a master's degree in a relevant field. The evaluation of applications will be done on the basis of both the candidate’s academic strengths and on the quality of the proposal (originality, importance and feasibility) and its relevance to the research profiles of the two participating departments.

    Commitment

The successful candidate will be obliged to give two public lectures for the Northern Scholars Scheme.

    Applying

Eligible applicants should complete an online scholarship application.

The closing date for applications for these scholarships is 1 February 2013.
