Dear fellow LAGB members,
I wanted to let you all know about an upcoming workshop that was generously funded by LAGB's Student Committee.
As part of discussions in the School of English (University of Sheffield) on "Centring Anti-Racist Scholarship in the Linguistics Curriculum", Dr. Aris Moreno Clemons (Assistant Professor of Hispanic Linguistics at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville) will be leading an online workshop beginning with the talk: '"They Spanish, They Ain't Black!" Language and Culture Sharing in the (De)Construction of Blackness', on Tuesday 15th June, 3.30-6pm. Dr. Clemons will be presenting ethnographic research she conducted during three significant moments of linguistic policing at a high school's Black History Month show, from a critical race and anthro-political perspective.
In the final hour of the workshop, Dr. Clemons will be leading a session discussing current debates in raciolinguistics and sociolinguistics, drawing on her own research in the field; fostering an ethos of anti-racism in linguistics; and highlighting privileges within certain positionalities and linguistic methodologies.
All are welcome to attend, regardless of your area of study/work, as we encourage interdisciplinary discussion surrounding how we can centre and amplify anti-racist research in the linguistics curriculum and beyond. To register, go here. For more information on the details of the workshop, see the School of English website here.
If you have any questions for Dr. Clemons prior to the talk, or any questions about the event's preparations, please email swhittle2@sheffield.ac.uk.
I am looking forward to seeing many of you there.
Best wishes,
Sophie Whittle
PhD student in Historical Linguistics, University of Sheffield
