Dear Colleagues,

One of the items on the AGM agenda will be education, which I’ve been invited to introduce. In preparation for this, you might like to look at some background information:

• An annual report on UKLO (the UK Linguistics Olympiad): http://www.uklo.org/sponsors#reports
• A page of information about a new project that we’re hoping the LAGB will support: LASER (Language Analysis at School: Education and Research). You’ll find this at http://clie.org.uk/laser

In a nutshell, I’ll be reporting that

• UKLO had a very good year in 2018, so we hope the LAGB will continue to support us financially.
• But we need more support from colleagues with marking and hosting the residential weekend.
• CliE (the Committee for Linguistics in Education, sponsored jointly by LAGB and BAAL) created UKLO as a competition run by schools, and is now planning to create LASER as a vehicle for introducing language analysis (= linguistics) into their ordinary teaching.
• We're asking for the moral support of CliE’s sponsors and hoping to recruit academics to help build this bridge from HE to schools.
