ESRC PhD Studentships Available for Sociolinguistics/Experimental Linguistics Research at QMUL

    September 2017 entry

    Application deadline: 31 January 2017

The Department of Linguistics at Queen Mary University of London is pleased to announce that ESRC funding is available for students wishing to carry out PhD research in sociolinguistics and/or experimental linguistics in the department. Funding (fees + living stipend) is available as part of the new London Interdisciplinary Social Science Doctoral Training Partnership (https://www.liss-dtp.ac.uk/), which will provide over 50 studentships per year across a range of social science disciplines. Funding is available for either PhD research only (3 years) or for the completion of a Master’s followed by a PhD (4 years). ESRC studentships are available for UK and EU students who are normally resident in the UK. UK and EU students who have not been normally resident in the UK for the past three years are eligible for a fees only award. Overseas students are not eligible for LISS awards.

The Linguistics Department at QMUL is a vibrant research community that currently includes 17 research and teaching staff and 25 PhD students. We are able to offer research supervision in multiple areas of sociolinguistics and experimental linguistics, including language variation and change, bilingualism, morphosyntactic and discourse variation, sociophonetics, discourse analysis, language and media, multimodality, and language attitudes, among other topics. For further details, see the department website: http://linguistics.sllf.qmul.ac.uk/postgraduate/phd-programmes. There you will also find information on our application procedures and requirements. Interested candidates should also consult the LISS website (https://www.liss-dtp.ac.uk/) for additional application materials.

The application deadline to be considered for an LISS award is 17:00 GMT on 31 January 2017. We strongly encourage candidates to contact the department before this date (and ideally by 16 December 2016) to discuss your proposal and application materials. Please address any initial queries to Erez Levon, Director of Postgraduate Studies for Linguistics, at ling-phd-admit@qmul.ac.uk
