Please find below the report of the association's Education Committee, which we annually post to the forum in advance of the AGM. We would welcome any comments and suggestions from members regarding the committee's activities.

LAGB Linguistics at School session 2015

The Linguistics at school session at the LAGB meeting at University College London is concerned with the educational implications of new research into bilingualism and cognition. Presenters include Antonella Sorace, Leah Roberts, Marisa Cordella and Hui Huang.

Committee work, including work on CLIE

Since the last LAGB AGM, members of the EC have:

    • Responded to government policy regarding school examinations in small-entry (i.e. community) languages
    • Met with members of the National Association for Teachers of English  (NATE) and the Association for Language Learning in order to support cross-curricular work on knowledge about language in the school curriculum
    • Presented at CPD events for teachers working on knowledge about language, including at the NATE and ALL annual conferences
    • Written a number of articles in publications for schools about KAL topics

    UKLO

There have been a number of developments concerning the UK Linguistics Olympiad this year.

    • The UK team did exceptionally well at the international competition: in the individual competition we won two golds, one silver and one bronze, along with three honourable mentions, and one of our teams was placed first in the team competition.
    • A new residential course was run in collaboration with Corpus Christi College, Cambridge, to support students from state schools who did well in the advanced competition in round 1, but not well enough to progress to round 2.
    • We haveWe have a new portal for the website.

    Cooperation with BAAL

BAAL has set up a new SIG entitled Linguistics and Knowledge about Language in Education, as a parallel to the Education Committee of LAGB; we hope to collaborate with members of that group in the future.

    Glossary of grammatical terminology

This resource for schools is now available online at http://lagb-education.org/grammatical-terminology-for-schools. We would welcome comments on content and on routes for dissemination.
