    SOAS Department of Linguistics

PhD Studentship (Morphosyntactic Variation in Bantu)

The School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London, is offering a home/EU PhD studentship within the Leverhulme-funded project ‘Morphosyntactic variation in Bantu: Typology, contact and change’.

The studentship is available for home/EU students only (normally defined as ‘3 years ordinary residence in the UK or EU country for purposes other than full-time education’, see http://www.soas.ac.uk/registry/fees/fee-status/). Completion or close to completion of a postgraduate degree in Linguistics or a closely related field will normally be expected. Previous experience and/or interest in African and/or Bantu languages and linguistics will be an advantage.

The studentship includes home/EU fee contribution of £3,900 p.a. plus a stipend of £15,726 p.a., and some funds for travel and subsistence costs for fieldwork and conference attendance.

Start date: 1 September 2014 or as soon as possible thereafter. End date: 30 August 2017 (final date for submission of thesis: 1 September 2018)

Applications should include a personal statement of about 500 words, a list of previous degrees with results (including any degree programmes currently enrolled in) and other academic achievements, the names and contact details of two referees and (optionally) a CV detailing other relevant information.

For further information about the project and the PhD position, please contact Lutz Marten at lm5@soas.ac.uk.

    Application deadline: 8 August 2014

Applications should be submitted in electronic form to Professor Lutz Marten at lm5@soas.ac.uk.

Applicants will also have to apply separately for a place of study in the PhD Programme in Linguistics, about which more information is available here:  http://www.soas.ac.uk/linguistics/programmes/phdling/. Award of the studentship is subject to confirmation of a formal offer of admission to the SOAS PhD Linguistics programme.
