2 PhD studentships

In linguistics - cognitive sciences - discourse analysis

 
Applications are invited for two SNF doctoral students (100%). Candidates will be working on their PhD within the SNF research project “Biased Communication: The Cognitive Pragmatics of Fallacies”.  The project is closely connected to the activities and doctoral tuition offered by the CRUS doctoral programme ‘Language & Cognition’ based at the University of Fribourg and the Cognitive Sciences Centre based at the
University of Neuchâtel, in Switzerland. Both PhDs will be jointly registered at both institutions (co-tutelle).
 

Profile

Successful applicants will have a Master’s degree in linguistics, psycholinguistics, or cognitive sciences (with a focus on language) by 1st January 2014 and will offer convincing evidence of potential for doctoral research. The field of specialization will preferably be at the interface between language and cognition, ideally in pragmatics, semantics, argumentation theory or discourse analysis. Knowledge of (or interest in)
experimental methodologies would constitute an advantage.

Work in the English department at Fribourg is conducted in English. Work at the Institut des Sciences du langage et de la communication at Neuchâtel is conducted in French and English. Active competence in English is required for both positions while some knowledge of French for casual interaction is welcome.
 

Salary and duration

Funding is available for three years. The initial appointment period is one year. Starting date is 1 March 2014. Salary in the first year will be circa CHF55000 (before taxes).
