We are delighted to inform you that UKRI has published its new Open Access Policy for peer-reviewed research articles and longform publications that acknowledge its funding.

The policy is the result of UKRI’s Open Access Review which was launched in Autumn 2018. The new Open Access Policy is a single open access policy across UKRI, including the seven Research Councils, Research England and Innovate UK. The policy will apply from 1 April 2022 for research articles and 1 January 2024 for longform publications. The RCUK Policy on Open Access should be followed until 1 April 2022. The policy is available on UKRI’s website, alongside information about the review and the evidence that informed our decision-making at Making your research publications open access and Shaping our open access policy.

The transition to full and immediate open access for publicly funded research will be a multi-stakeholder effort and we are grateful for your engagement and participation in the UKRI open access policy review. We would also like to thank you for responding to our public consultation on open access as part of the UKRI Open Access Review.

UKRI will be engaging across its stakeholder community to implement the policy ahead of April 2022, this includes supporting actions and interventions to aid compliance and providing funding to support the policy.
