    Organised by the University of Zaragoza



    The aim of the second conference of the 'English in Europe' Network is to gain a comparative understanding of the debates surrounding the role and status of English in Europe in academic and research settings. Topics, which emerged in the first conference (Sheffield, 20-22 April 2012), will include, but not limited to:

    • Discourses of English as a lingua franca in academic and research settings
    • The publish in English or perish dilemma
    • Language attitudes towards the advancement of English
    • English language hegemony vs. minority national languages
    • Language contact and language change
    • The teaching of English for Academic Purposes
    • English as a lingua franca and academic enculturation
    • Codification of academic English(es)
    • Language policies regarding the use of English
    • Comparison with and across areas of the world

    Submission Guidelines:

    Please send an anonymous abstract of less than 500 words as an attachment on any of the topics listed above or any topic related to the conference them to the conference email address: zaragozaEIE@gmail.com. In a second attachment include your abstract along with the title of your paper, the name and contact details of the author(s).


    Important deadlines:
    Deadline for submission: 1 September 2012
    Notification of Acceptance: 15 September 2012
    Conference: 1-2 December 2012

    John M. Swales (University of Michigan)
    Karen Bennett (University of Coimbra, Portugal)
    Ana Bocanegra-Valle (University of Cádiz, Spain)



    The conference is primarily sponsored by the Leverhulme Trust in the UK and will also be sponsored by InterLAE research group, the Department of English and German Studies at the University of Zaragoza and the Vicerectorate of Research at the University of Zaragoza.
