FEE WAIVER MRes STUDENTSHIPS at NORTHUMBRIA UNIVERSITY

The Department of Humanities at Northumbria University invites applications for 2012-13 entry to its MRes in Language and Cognition and its MRes in Linguistics or English Language. The MRes is a masters programme based around individual students' research projects. The MRes is available as a full-time one-year or two-year part-time programme (please note that the studentships only apply to the one year full-time route). The Department offers up to seven  studentships to cover the cost of fees. These are open to home/EU and International students.

The deadline for the studentship application is Friday 22 June 2012 with interviews due to take place in the week beginning 2 July.

The MRes in Language and Cognition is a unique interdisciplinary programme which builds on two areas of particular research strength at Northumbria: cognitive linguistics in the Department of Humanities and psycholinguistics in the Department of Psychology (School of Life Sciences). The programme explores the relationship between language and cognition from a linguistic and psychological point of view and introduces students to a broad range of research methodologies, from corpus analyses to eye tracking and ERPs.  It will appeal to graduates of English language, modern languages, linguistics, psychology, and cognitive science. Although it is a stand-alone degree, it is anticipated that a significant proportion of the students will continue on to a PhD; hence there is a strong emphasis on research methods and independent research.

The MRes in Linguistics or English Language offers a natural progression for students who have obtained a good undergraduate/BA degree in Linguistics or English Language. They are taught by academic staff who have a track record of publishing top quality research in a diverse range of areas within Linguistics and English Language.

The degrees offer the perfect start for students who are looking for a career in research, teaching , other areas of the public or private sectors , or hoping to go on to a PhD programme. On completion, students will be well-prepared to commence work on a PhD and to finish this within three years. We welcome candidates for the MRes in Linguistics and MRes in English Language who have an interest in any area of the broad field of linguistics which may include, but are not limited to:

    language structure

    discourse analysis

    language and meaning

    language acquisition

    language variation

    linguistic theory
