The Centre for Research in Linguistics and Language Sciences (CRiLLS) at Newcastle University hosts one of the largest communities of researchers in linguistics and language sciences in the country, with approximately 40 staff and 220 postgraduate students.

In the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise, our linguistics research was ranked third in the UK in terms of research power, that is, the combination of quality of research produced and number of active researchers.

For 2012 entry we expect to have at least one studentship in Linguistics available through the AHRC’s Doctoral Awards scheme. This scheme provides studentships to enable students to undertake and complete a doctoral degree (PhD).  Closing date for applications is 1st March 2012. Please consult http://www.ncl.ac.uk/postgraduate/funding/search/list/ahrc-doc-ling for more information.

Our research specialisms and supervisory expertise include: syntax (comparative, evolutionary, historical, acquisitional), phonology, morphology, phonetics, semantics, pragmatics and discourse analysis, first and second language acquisition, sociolinguistics historical linguistics, and dialectology. Our research covers a wide range of languages, including but not limited to Arabic, Bengali, English (in all its forms), Dutch, French, German, Italian, Quechua, Scandinavian languages, Spanish and Welsh.
