The Department of Language and Linguistic Science invites applications for a PhD studentship starting in October 2017 (https://www.york.ac.uk/language/postgraduate/phd/).  Any aspect of linguistics within the areas of expertise of the staff in the department (http://www.york.ac.uk/language/research) is eligible for support.

The studentship includes a fee waiver at the UK/EU level and a stipend of £14,296 per year.

Eligibility Criteria

1.     You will hold a first class or upper second undergraduate degree in linguistics and, by the time you start your PhD, a Masters degree in the relevant area of linguistics. 

2.     You will hold an offer of a PhD place in the Department of Language and Linguistic Science at the University of York.

If you have not yet submitted an application for PhD study in the Department of Language and Linguistic Science at the University of York, then you should follow the University of York’s online application procedure at the following URL:

You will need to complete the online application form. You should indicate in the application form that you wish to be considered for this Department Studentship, and your personal statement should justify why you are a good candidate for the studentship. In addition you will need to upload:

●      A research proposal (maximum 1500 words)

●      Your CV

●      Relevant academic transcripts

You will be asked to supply the names of 2 referees.

We recommend that you discuss your proposal with a potential supervisor in the Department, before you submit it.

If you already hold a PhD place offer, you do not need to apply again. However, please send an email to <linguistics-pg-admissions@york.ac.uk> to indicate that you wish to be considered for the Department Studentship, and include a cover letter that justifies why you are a good candidate for the studentship. You may submit an updated proposal if you wish, and you may ask your referees to send new references specifically for the studentship application. These should also be sent to <linguistics-pg-admissions@york.ac.uk>.
