2018 Annual Meeting of the Linguistics Association of Great Britain

University of Sheffield, 11-14 September 2018

Workshop on linguistic approaches to literature, Weds 12th September

Organised by Robyn Orfitelli, University of Sheffield.

With the birth of digital humanities, the field of literary linguistics has benefited from an increase in the type and amount of available data,  as well as access to new methodological and analytical tools. Extensive sets of electronic literary corpora, computational modeling, eye-tracking, neuro-imaging and reaction time studies are providing new insights on historical and contemporary literature, particularly when combined with longstanding tools of theoretical, sociolinguistic, and pragmatic analysis. This workshop will explore how a range of developments have refined and contributed to our understanding of both individual texts and the overall enterprise of literary linguistics.

Invited talks will be given by Mel Evans (Leicester), Nigel Fabb (Strathclyde), Michaela Mahlberg (Birmingham), Marjo van Koppen (Utrecht), and Thorhallur Eythorsson (Iceland).

For details of the workshop, see the programme.
